This festival is celebrated on Ashwini Purnima falling on mid-night. Sharad Poornima’s other names are Kumara Purnima, Kojagiri Purnima, Navanna Purnima, Ashwin Purnima or Kaumudi Purnima.

On this day mata Laxmi and God Chandra are Worshipped. It is believed that on this day, the Moon rays have certain healing properties which nourish the body and the soul. Hence, traditionally on the day of Sharad Purnima, Rice-Kheer, is prepared and left in moonlight for the whole night. In the morning, Kheer which is believed to be fortified with the moonlight is consumed and distributed as Prasad in family members. According to the legend of Samudra Manthan, on this day Goddess Lakshmi was appeared from the ocean and it is believed that on Sharad Poornima Mata Lakshmi comes on earth to give her blessings.
